"The Doctor saw the shape of an enormous turtle"
"How much further have we got to go?" asked the Doctor,万大🍥 rinsing the mud off his hat in a pool.
"But how do you tell oysters of that kind from the others?" asked the Doctor.
But just at that moment the order came from the Captain,万大📈 "Cease firing!" And the men left their places.
Then the Captain,歌星🍻 who a moment before was all for punishing the man who had fired without orders,歌星😥 wanted to know who it was that aimed that marvelous shot which brought the slaver to a standstill. And the Doctor was going to tell him it was Speedy. But the Skimmer whispered in his ear:
CHAPTER VI
"Good Lord!" groaned the Doctor,歌星📧 and he nearly broke the paddle as he churned the water astern to make the canoe go faster yet.
"Oh,歌星🚀 I think this is an awful place,周笔畅📗" said Gub-Gub as they got out of the canoe. "Nothing but waves and rocks. What have you come here for,歌星😀 Doctor?"
And then the Fantippans,歌星🚉 who so far had been very timid about going far out to sea on account of storms,万大👫 now that they had a good weather bureau and knew what weather to expect,歌星🚡 began building larger sailboats,歌星🐐 instead of their little frail canoes. And they became what is called a mercantile nation,歌星📝 traded up and down the shores of West Africa,歌星🈴 and even went as far south as the Cape of Good Hope and entered the Indian Ocean to traffic in goods with people of foreign lands.
And the government got quite worked up about it. And they sent the Royal Meteorologist,万大📄 an old gray-haired weather man,周笔畅🚔 down to Fantippo to see how the Doctor was doing it.
Then Speedy whispered in the Doctor's ear:
"Well,周笔畅🍱 right from the start we did a roaring trade. All the dogs for miles around heard of us and came to hire bones. And we would charge them according to the length of time they wanted to hire them. For instance,万大🌁 you could rent a good ham bone for one day for a candlestick or a hair brush; for three days for a violin or an umbrella. And if you wanted your bone for a whole week you had to bring us a suit of clothes in payment.
For a moment Too-Too's plump sides shook with silent laughter as he recalled the scene he was describing.
Cheapside had been right. Although it did not take a fortnight to tell it did take a very full day. Slowly and evenly the sun rose out of the East,万大🚛 passed across the heavens and sank down into the West. And still Mudface went murmuring on,周笔畅🐜 telling of all the wonders he had seen in days long ago,歌星🐶 while the Doctor's pencil wiggled untiringly over the pages of his notebook. The only interruptions were when the turtle paused to lean down and moisten his long throat with the muddy water of the lake,万大🆎 or when the Doctor stopped him to ask a question on the natural history of antediluvian times.
"I'm afraid we're pretty poor fishers,周笔畅🐀" said John Dolittle. "Of course,歌星🍓 it's possible that there may not be any more pearls there."
Then the Doctor was sorry and wished he hadn't discharged Cheapside,万大🚛 who seemed to be the only one who could manage this part of the mails properly.
"Oh,万大💊 yes,万大🎂" said the gull,万大😻 "it wastes a little time. But,周笔畅🎀 you know,万大🏥 we very seldom let ourselves get caught by a storm."
It was about five o'clock in the evening when they came to the end of the little islands and mud banks. And as the canoe's nose glided easily forward into entirely open water they suddenly found themselves looking across a great inland sea.
"Humph!" said the Doctor,万大📮 who had now got the loose tooth out and was showing the baby hippo how to rinse his mouth in the river. "I'm sorry. I suppose I should have sent you a message. But I've been so awfully busy. Let's go up under the shade of those palms and sit down. It was about the post office that I wanted to talk to you."
"All right,万大🐫" said the Doctor,周笔畅😥 "I'll call on him with your compliments."
"'Well,万大🐂 it comes easy,万大🌵' said George. 'Maybe there's not so much credit in it for that. But,歌星📮 tell me,万大🌕 do you make much money at this game?'
